Palakkad braces for extreme heat as IMD warns of 40-41°C in Kerala
IMD cautions Kerala on an impending heatwave, with Palakkad seeing potential highs of 41°C and other districts reaching the high 30s to 40°C range this week.
Kerala is bracing for a heatwave as the India Meteorological Department issued a warning after temperatures crossed the 40°C mark in Palakkad. An IMD bulletin says maximum temperatures are very likely to be around 41°C in isolated places in Palakkad, with 40°C forecast in Kollam and Thrissur; 38°C in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode; 37°C in Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod; and 36°C in Thiruvananthapuram district till April 24.
As of now, Palakkad has already recorded above-40°C conditions, with a departure from normal of more than 4.5°C on April 22. If the temperature continues to exceed 40°C for a second consecutive day with a similar departure, a heatwave could be declared. The IMD has already declared a heatwave warning in Palakkad and Kollam districts based on recent readings.
This forecast spans multiple districts across the state, underscoring the broad reach of the heat. The bulletin notes that the heat is expected to persist through the referenced period, with temperatures remaining high even as humidity keeps conditions uncomfortable for outdoor activities. Authorities have stressed the importance of staying hydrated and limiting outdoor exposure during peak sun hours as the region navigates these extreme conditions.
