Voting for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India's wealthiest civic body, is set to take place this week as residents head to the polls in a high-stakes local election. The BMC has unveiled a hefty budget of Rs 74,427 crore for FY 2025-26, its largest-ever and a 14% rise from the previous year. Of this, Rs 43,166 crore is earmarked for capital expenditure, accounting for 58% of the total outlay. The scale of the budget underscores the BMC's financial heft and its crucial role in urban governance. It also marks the budget as larger than the combined budgets of several Indian states, with comparisons noting that states like Goa and Arunachal Pradesh fall short of the BMC's total.
As voters prepare to cast ballots across 227 wards in 28 municipal corporations on Thursday, elections authorities will close polling at 5:30 pm and begin counting the next day. The BMC election has drawn intense attention not only for the city’s wealth but for the tangible promises residents seek—from water supply and redevelopment to addressing traffic and air quality concerns.
The BMC’s outlay dwarfs budgets of other metro bodies: the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has proposed around Rs 16,530 crore for 2026-27, while Bengaluru’s Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has a 2025-26 outlay of about Rs 19,930 crore. By comparison, Mumbai’s 2024-25 budget stood at Rs 59,954.7 crore, illustrating how the city’s fiscal footprint far exceeds many peers. This election thus becomes a referendum not just on leadership but on how effectively a city with such a depth of resources can translate money into lived improvements for its residents.
