Polling has begun in Puducherry for the Assembly election 2026, with 1,099 polling stations across the Union Territory set to welcome voters. Officials say more than 9 lakh electors are eligible to vote across Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, reflecting the scale of the contest where 294 candidates are in the fray. Security is heightened for the day, with 2,791 policemen and personnel from 30 CAPF companies deployed to guard polling locations and ensure orderly voting. The setup underscores the government and administration’s focus on a smooth and secure process even as the vote moves forward across four regions.
For many first-time voters, the moment carries a sense of responsibility and curiosity. Among them are 24,919 first-time electors who have reached voting age this year. A student from Pondicherry Technological University reflected on learning about voting rights in school and taking the step to cast a ballot after researching the process online. She noted that while she isn’t sure her vote will drastically change society, she feels more mature and excited to participate in the decision-making process. Her sister, pursuing a master’s degree in English literature, accompanies her and also highlighted the desire for better civic amenities such as roads and drinking water as key concerns.
Election officials acknowledge the logistical complexities, including the fact that 209 polling stations are marked as vulnerable and five are critical. Polls opened at 7 a.m. and, as the day progressed, turnout data began to emerge. As of 11 a.m., the reported turnout stood at 37.06%, with about 9.50 lakh electors across Puducherry’s four regions participating so far. The four regions—Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam—will collectively determine the fate of the 294 candidates contesting seats in this Union Territory election.
