High drama unfolded at Jantar Mantar in Delhi as protests re-erupted, leading to significant police action. Over 500 individuals were reportedly detained, and internet services in the vicinity were temporarily cut off, intensifying the tense atmosphere.
The demonstrations were primarily driven by demands for the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, criticizing the functioning of the Election Commission (EC). Protesters voiced concerns over the EC's handling of electoral rolls and the Systematic Information Review (SIR) exercise, signaling deep dissatisfaction with the current electoral processes.
Authorities had taken proactive measures in anticipation of the protests.
Delhi Police had not granted permission for the planned demonstrations, including those by AISA regarding electoral roll issues and a protest sought by the Indian Youth Congress. Prohibitory orders under 163 BNSS were invoked across central Delhi to maintain public safety and order, accompanied by traffic restrictions.
Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) had also conducted assessments to identify potential security risks, such as broken pavements and walls in the New Delhi area, indicating a heightened state of alert. Despite these preparations and restrictions, protesters gathered, leading to the large-scale detentions and the disruption of internet services, underscoring the determination of the activists to make their voices heard on critical electoral issues.
