Huw Edwards' Secret Poetry Entry Sparks Backlash Amid Conviction!

Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has ignited a fresh wave of controversy after it was revealed he entered a Welsh poetry competition under a pseudonym, claiming it was to “correct” the “toxic narrative” surrounding him in the media.

Edwards, who received a suspended prison sentence in 2024 after pleading guilty to receiving and making indecent images of children, submitted a poem to the National Eisteddfod, Wales’ largest cultural festival, using the name “Gelyn,” which translates to “Enemy” in English. Writing in his Substack on Sunday (August 2), Edwards stated his entry, a personal tribute to his father, was inspired by the contest's theme of “knowing.”

All participants in the competition submit their work anonymously under a pseudonym, with their true identities remaining sealed until a potential win of the £750 prize and prestigious crown. Although Edwards did not emerge victorious, the prize went to journalist Martin Huws, his participation has been met with severe criticism.

Welsh actor Sera Cracroft, known from Pobol y Cwm, expressed profound disappointment, calling Edwards' potential win “catastrophic.” She commented to Welsh programme Newyddion S4C, “Huw has said he is receiving mental health support and to be completely honest, I don't think it's working for him. I'm very, very disappointed that he's done that so soon after being convicted of creating paedophilia online. Some of the images were in the worst category possible.”

In response to Cracroft’s remarks, Edwards reiterated that his intention was to rectify the “toxic narrative that was propagated by the media two years ago.” The National Eisteddfod, in a statement to the BBC, confirmed their rigorous anonymous submission process, ensuring that “nobody, including the judges, know beforehand who has competed.”
