Nuisance Call Firm Fined £190K for Targeting Elderly! 😡

Britain's data watchdog has slammed Elderly Aids Limited (EAL) with a hefty £190,000 fine for systematically hounding elderly individuals with unsolicited calls. The company deceptively claimed to be selling devices designed to block unwanted calls, ironically becoming the very nuisance they pretended to solve.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) revealed that EAL deliberately targeted vulnerable people, making an astonishing nearly 760,000 cold calls between May 2024 and February last year. These calls were even made to individuals registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), a service specifically designed to allow people and businesses to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls.

It is illegal to make a live marketing call to anyone registered with the TPS without their explicit permission.

Complaints poured in, painting a picture of aggressive and misleading tactics by EAL callers.

Many failed to identify themselves, adding to the deceptive nature of their operations.

One poignant example cited by the ICO involved an elderly father who was persuaded to sign up for a call-blocker service, paying an initial £139 upfront and a recurring monthly fee of £6.99. Adding insult to injury, EAL repeatedly ignored requests for information from the ICO and continued its illicit calling activities even during the ongoing investigation.

Furthermore, the company attempted to strike itself off the Companies House register as the probe intensified, a move seen as an attempt to evade accountability. Andy Curry, head of investigations at the ICO, condemned the company's actions, highlighting how they exploited vulnerable individuals who had clearly indicated they did not wish to be contacted.
