West Bengal witnessed a landmark moment on Monday, June 22, 2026, as Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta unveiled the first budget of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state. The budget has been widely welcomed by prominent industry leaders, who lauded its comprehensive approach to economic development, focusing on infrastructure, land reform, healthcare, and significant welfare measures.
Key announcements designed to boost public welfare include a substantial 20% Dearness Allowance (DA) hike for state government employees, a commitment to creating one lakh new government jobs, and an ambitious ₹36,000 crore direct cash transfer scheme specifically for women. These initiatives are expected to provide significant relief and opportunities across the state.
Industry stalwarts have expressed strong approval for the budget's vision. Mehul Mohanka, Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Eastern Region, hailed it as "a forward-looking roadmap for infrastructure-led growth and industrial competitiveness." He particularly highlighted the critical role of litigation-free land in attracting large-scale investments. Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman of Ambuja Neotia Group, found it encouraging that the budget views growth as an "ecosystem" rather than isolated initiatives. Taranjit Singh, Chairman of ASSOCHAM Eastern Region, also commended the clear roadmap for accelerating economic growth.
The budget outlines major infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and boosting regional development. Proposals include expanding metro rail services, with studies planned for new routes in Durgapur, Asansol, and Siliguri. A deep-sea port is planned at Dadanpatrabar in Purba Medinipur, alongside a greenfield airport spanning 1,000-1,500 acres near Kalyani, designed to alleviate congestion at Kolkata airport. These projects are anticipated to enhance urban mobility, support workforce movement, and strengthen productivity in key industrial centers.
Beyond infrastructure, the budget also promises to reconsider land ceiling policies to facilitate large investments and bolster healthcare capacity and education. The combined emphasis on regional connectivity, industrial development initiatives, and employment generation is projected to expand economic activity significantly, reaching well beyond the state's traditional growth centers. The new government aims to restore fiscal discipline, enhance revenue mobilization, and build public trust through these strategic budgetary allocations.
