A former healthcare worker has been formally cautioned by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for attempting to illegally obtain and sell the medical records of Catherine, Princess of Wales. The incident occurred while Princess Kate was a patient at the prestigious London Clinic in January 2024 for abdominal surgery.
The ICO launched a criminal investigation in March 2024 following a report that a staff member at the private hospital had tried to access the princess's highly sensitive notes. The privacy and data protection watchdog concluded that a caution was "the appropriate and proportionate enforcement response" to what it described as "deliberate misuse of highly sensitive personal information and an offer to disclose it for financial gain."
The London Clinic, known as the UK's largest independent private hospital and a frequent choice for royal medical care, confirmed its cooperation with the ICO. A spokesperson for the hospital stated, "We are pleased our work with the ICO has brought this sad and isolated incident to a conclusion. There were no regulatory breaches by the hospital." The ICO also noted that its investigation found no evidence of "wider organisational issues arising from the healthcare provision in this matter."
Ian Hulme, the ICO's executive director for regulatory supervision, emphasized the importance of trust in healthcare settings. "People should be able to trust that the personal information they're giving to healthcare settings is safe and protected from exploitation," he said. "When this trust is broken, it's right that the law allows us to take action."
Princess Catherine underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024, leading to a period away from public duties for recovery. Two months later, she publicly revealed she had been receiving treatment for cancer, returning to public engagements after confirming her remission earlier this year. This latest incident highlights the intense public and media scrutiny surrounding the royal family's private health matters.
