Tensions High: Migrants Arrive in Gosport Amid South Coast Protests
Dramatic scenes unfolded in Gosport as over 100 migrants landed on the south coast, met by protesters. Police intervened, and Channel crossings remain a hot topic. Get the full story on this developing situation!
Protesters gathered in the south coast town of Gosport as more than 100 people, believed to be migrants, were brought ashore after crossing the English Channel in a small boat. The dramatic events unfolded on a Sunday evening, with individuals seen arriving at a Gosport marina aboard two RNLI boats.
French media reports indicated approximately 120 migrants were on board the dinghy, which reportedly set off from near Utah Beach in Normandy earlier that day. Hampshire Police deployed officers to the scene to "support our partners in the event of an emergency at sea." The force took measures under the Public Order Act, imposing conditions and prohibiting the wearing of face coverings among the demonstrators.
A police cordon was established on Haslar Road in Gosport, where the atmosphere, despite the high tensions, largely remained peaceful.
However, some protesters directly confronted authorities, standing in front of police vans to block their advancement.
Chants of "shame on you" and "deport the lot" could be heard.
Ambulances and coaches were also reported to be in the area, indicating the scale of the operation. A Home Office spokesperson commented on the situation, stating that the
Border Security Command works around the clock to monitor the Channel and protect our border.
They emphasized the importance of continuing to "detain, check and process every small boat arrival." This incident is not isolated.
Similar scenes occurred last month when protesters gathered expecting migrants to arrive, though on that occasion, the individuals were ultimately taken to Dover by sea. While departures from as far west as Normandy have been rare in recent years, this marks the third such crossing in the space of a month.
The provisional total for Channel crossings this year stands at 19,451, which is notably down 43% on this time last year and 23% below the figure recorded at this stage in 2024. #GosportProtest #MigrantCrisis #ChannelCrossings #UKImmigration
