Bail Granted for Ex-CM Baghel’s Son in Chhattisgarh Liquor Scam

The Chhattisgarh High Court on Friday granted bail to Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, in two cases tied to the alleged ₹3,000 crore liquor scam in the state. The bail covers a money-laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate and a corruption case lodged by the Chhattisgarh Anti-Corruption Bureau/Economic Offences Wing. The ED had arrested Baghel in July last year in its probe, while the ACB/EOW arrested him in September while he was in jail. The ED has alleged that the scam was orchestrated between 2019 and 2022, a period when the Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel was in office, with Baghel at the helm of the alleged liquor syndicate and personally handling nearly ₹1,000 crore generated from the purported scheme. The ACB/EOW contends that Baghel received around ₹200–₹250 crore as his share, with total proceeds potentially exceeding ₹3,500 crore. Welcoming the order, former CM Baghel described the bail as a “great relief” and said truth may be troubled, but it cannot be defeated. The court’s decision allows Baghel’s son to await trial on bail, while investigations continue. The case has drawn widespread attention and sparked political debate as authorities pursue further evidence in the multi-crore allegations.
