Israel on High Alert as Oct 7 Anniversary Approaches, Gaza Warned
As the October 7 anniversary looms, Israel's military is on high alert due to intelligence of potential Hamas attacks. Gaza has been warned of a "heavy price" if forces are harmed.
Israel's Defence Minister recently announced that the military has been placed on high alert as the October 7 anniversary approaches. The directive, issued on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, comes in response to intelligence reports suggesting Hamas intends to carry out attacks and terror operations against Israeli forces in Gaza on that day.
The Defence Minister's office, led by Israel Katz, issued a stark warning to Gazans, stating that if Israeli forces were harmed,
the ones who will pay the heavy price will be Hamas and the population of Gaza — beyond all proportion.
This cautionary message underscores the heightened tensions in the region as the third anniversary of the devastating 2023 attack nears.
The original October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas marked the deadliest day in Israel's history, claiming the lives of 1,221 people. Additionally, 251 hostages were abducted into Gaza, with 44 of them confirmed dead. In response to this unprecedented assault, Israel launched a comprehensive military offensive that has left vast swathes of Gaza in ruins and resulted in a staggering loss of life.
According to Gaza's Health Ministry, which provides figures considered reliable by the United Nations, more than 74,200 people have been killed since the conflict began.
Even after a ceasefire was declared last October, violence has persisted. Data from Gaza's Health Ministry indicates that Israeli forces have killed over 1,440 people in Gaza since then.
The grim anniversary serves as a reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the deep scars left by the conflict.
Just prior to the military alert, on Monday, October 5, during a state ceremony marking three years since the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated a resolute stance. He declared that there would be “no Hamas rule in Gaza” and vowed to continue targeting anyone involved in the initial attack or the holding of hostages.
These statements highlight Israel's firm commitment to security as the region braces for the sensitive anniversary.
