Farage Faces Record Field of 33 Rivals in Clacton By-Election Spectacle
Nigel Farage's self-triggered Clacton by-election, slammed as a "stunt" by major parties, draws a record 34 candidates, including Count Binface. Get the full story!
Nigel Farage is set to contend with an unprecedented 33 rival candidates in the upcoming Clacton-on-Sea by-election, a contest he personally initiated. This unusual electoral event, scheduled for August 13, was sparked by Farage's protest against media and parliamentary scrutiny of his financial affairs and backers, a situation he frames as "people versus the establishment."
The by-election has been met with significant disdain from the main Westminster parties. Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, and Restore Britain have all opted to boycott the race, dismissing it as a mere "stunt" by the Reform UK leader. Yvette Cooper, a prominent Labour figure, went as far as to label Farage's move a "political tantrum," while others condemned it as "fake" and a "gimmick" designed to deflect from serious allegations he faces.
This boycott leaves the door open for a remarkably diverse and colourful array of opponents. Among the most prominent challengers are satirical candidate Count Binface and actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox. The field also includes three candidates from the wonderfully named Official Monster Raving Loony Party, alongside numerous independents, all vying for the attention of Clacton voters.
Tendring District Council has officially confirmed that a total of 34 candidates will be on the ballot, a figure widely believed to be a new record for any parliamentary contest in the UK. The previous high, according to the council, was 26 candidates, set during the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in July 2008. Interestingly, that contest was also triggered by a sitting MP, Conservative Sir David Davis, and similarly saw the main political parties decline to participate.
On August 13, ballots will be distributed across 51 polling stations throughout the constituency, where nearly 80,000 eligible electors will have the chance to cast their vote in what promises to be one of the most talked-about and unconventional by-elections in recent memory.
