ECI to Roll Out SIR in 17 States, 5 UTs After Assembly Polls
Election Commission plans the third and final phase of Special Intensive Revision in 17 states and 5 UTs after this month's assembly polls, aiming to clean voter rolls ahead of results.
Election Commission is ready to roll out the third and final phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list in 22 states and union territories, including Delhi, after the ongoing Assembly elections wrap up later this month. The five states holding polls this month are Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, with counting expected on May 4. Officials say SIR could be rolled out after polls conclude on April 29, or begin after results are declared.
So far, SIR has been carried out in 10 states and 3 UTs, with about 60 crore of the nearly 99 crore voters covered. The remaining nearly 39 crore electors will be included in the pan-India exercise in 17 states and five UTs. In a letter to chief electoral officers of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana and Uttarakhand, the poll authority reiterated that the nationwide SIR of voters' list was ordered in June last year.
The exercise is part of ongoing efforts to clean up the electoral rolls and ensure the accuracy of the voters’ list ahead of the next phase of electoral processes. Preparations were advised to begin in advance, and the plan envisions a nationwide SIR in the coming months, subject to poll timings and results.
