Mumbai is currently grappling with a severe water crisis as the city's reservoir levels have alarmingly dropped to just 10.35%. This critical situation, exacerbated by a delayed monsoon, has prompted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to enforce stringent water restrictions across various sectors, effective June 17.
Industrial and commercial establishments, including sports clubs, are now facing a significant 20% reduction in their water supply. The BMC has also taken decisive action by disconnecting water connections to all construction sites and swimming pools. Furthermore, no new freshwater connections will be provided for construction projects until the situation improves, ensuring that precious potable water is prioritized for essential use.
The measures extend to public utilities as well, with public toilets and urinals being directed to source their water through alternative means such as tankers and borewells. Similarly, other establishments have been urged to utilize wells, tube wells, and borewells for all non-potable purposes, reserving municipal supply for drinking and domestic use.
In a bid to conserve every drop, the civic body has also strictly prohibited the use of potable water for non-essential activities like washing vehicles, watering gardens, and cleaning roads or premises. These new restrictions come on top of existing citywide water-saving measures, highlighting the gravity of the water shortage facing Mumbai residents and businesses.
