Simran Bala Leads All-Male CRPF Contingent on Republic Day

Simran Bala, a 26-year-old assistant commandant, made history by leading an all-male CRPF contingent at the Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path in New Delhi. Commissioned into the CRPF in April 2025, she hails from Nowshera in Jammu and Kashmir and is currently posted with the Bastariya battalion in Chhattisgarh, which focuses on anti-Naxal operations. Bala commanded a squad of 147 personnel as they marched to the CRPF’s signature song, Desh ke hum hain rakshak, marking a historic moment for the force.

The ceremony underscored a significant shift in gender dynamics within India’s premier internal security outfit. While women CRPF officers have led contingents before, Bala’s role as the leader of an entirely male squad is a first, highlighting growing opportunities for women in frontline security positions. Bala expressed pride in the opportunity, saying she felt truly honoured to lead the contingent and thanked the CRPF for the trust placed in her.

Her roots trace back to Rajouri, a district known for its border proximity, where Bala’s family has a history of military service; her father and grandfather served in the Indian Army. She completed her political science degree at Government College for Women in Jammu’s Gandhinagar before joining the CRPF. Bala’s ascent is celebrated as a landmark for aspiring women in uniform and a reminder of the diverse backgrounds from which security leaders come.

The CRPF remains the nation’s largest internal security force, with roughly 3.25 lakh personnel and theatres spanning anti-Naxal operations, counter-terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, and counter-insurgency in the northeast. Bala’s achievement adds a new chapter to the ongoing evolution of leadership within the force and the broader Republic Day narrative of national unity and resilience.
