Bengal CM Pushes for School Mobile Ban & New 'CM Shri' Schools!

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently made significant announcements regarding educational reforms in the state, emphasizing the need to restrict mobile phone usage among students and introduce new schooling initiatives. Speaking on the occasion of Teachers' Day, CM Adhikari expressed concern over the negative impact of mobile phones on children, stating that regulating their use in schools is crucial for meaningful educational reforms.

He highlighted that states like Gujarat already have policies restricting mobile phones for students from Class I to XII, and Karnataka is also considering similar legislation for those under 16 years of age. The Chief Minister acknowledged that such decisions might face public resistance but firmly believes in their necessity for the students' well-being.

Furthering his vision for education, CM Adhikari announced the establishment of two 'CM Shri' schools in each district, modeled after the Central Government's 'PM Shri' schools. These new institutions will offer admission from Class VI based purely on merit and will be equipped with modern facilities, including smart boards.

Additionally, the state plans to set up large sports-related institutions in the western and northern regions, aiming to reintroduce traditional games like Kho-kho and Kabaddi into the school curriculum.

In a move to ensure fairness and transparency, the Chief Minister also addressed teacher recruitment.

He assured that the process would adhere strictly to the directives of the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court, with merit being the primary criterion for selection. He specifically mentioned that the viva voce component would not exceed five marks. Furthermore, new recruitments will follow the recently amended OBC list, which saw the West Bengal Legislative Assembly remove 77 communities (mostly added post-2010) in June 2026.

This comprehensive approach underscores the government's commitment to improving educational standards and practices across West Bengal.
