India and Canada have officially kicked off their fourth round of negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). These crucial talks, which began on Monday, September 14, 2026, in Delhi, aim to wrap up this year, signalling a strong push for deeper economic ties.
The five-day discussion, set to conclude on September 18, will cover a wide array of important topics.
Key areas include trade in goods, services, rules of origin, and tackling technical trade barriers.
This follows the third round of talks that took place in Ottawa back in July, indicating a steady progression in the diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
The stakes are high as both countries have set an ambitious target: to boost bilateral trade to an impressive $50 billion by the year 2030. This goal comes at a critical time, especially since two-way trade saw a slight dip recently. In 2025-26, trade between India and Canada was valued at $7.95 billion, a decrease from $8.66 billion recorded in 2024-25.
India's exports accounted for $4.67 billion and imports for $3.28 billion in the last fiscal year.
India's primary exports to Canada include essential goods such as pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronic goods, and various chemicals. On the other hand, Canada's main contributions to India's imports consist of pulses, pearls and semi-precious stones, coal, fertiliser, paper, and petroleum crude.
Beyond physical goods, India also has a significant presence in Canada's services sector, particularly in telecommunications, computer and information services, and other business services.
Adding another layer of significance to these talks is the strong human connection between the two countries.
Canada is currently home to over 425,000 Indian students and boasts a vibrant and influential Indian community, further cementing the need for robust and mutually beneficial economic policies.
