NHS Crisis: ADHD & Autism Costs "Out of Control" in England!

The cost of providing essential ADHD and autism services across England is spiralling "out of control," according to a stark warning issued by NHS leaders. The NHS Alliance, representing health managers, has revealed that a dramatic surge in demand since the coronavirus pandemic has led to unsustainable spending, with some areas experiencing a tenfold increase in costs over just one year.

This unprecedented rise is putting immense pressure on an already stretched National Health Service. One integrated care board (ICB) reported its monthly expenditure soaring from £146,000 to an astonishing £1.5 million last year. Similarly, spending on adult ADHD services for another ICB is projected to leap from £11 million in the previous financial year to a staggering £51 million this year.

The escalating demand, coupled with insufficient NHS capacity, has triggered a rapid influx of new private providers into the market.

This phenomenon is partly driven by patients' "right to choose," which allows individuals seeking diagnosis for themselves or their children to opt for any qualified provider.

This has resulted in a huge increase in the number of providers; one ICB, for example, now works with 80 different providers, up from just 12-14 two years ago.

However, this rapid expansion isn't without its challenges.

NHS Alliance has voiced serious concerns regarding the quality assurance and regulation of these new entities, particularly smaller, non-regulated providers.

While these providers can help ease assessment delays, many do not offer crucial ongoing care, leaving a gap in comprehensive support.

The consequence for some regions is dire, forcing them to close waiting lists or consider reining in other vital services to manage these burgeoning costs. The situation underscores a critical need for sustainable solutions and careful oversight to ensure both access and quality of care for those needing ADHD and autism support.
