US Fires Missiles at Ship Defying Iran Blockade, Escalating Tensions
Breaking: U.S. military disables cargo vessel 'Vela Nova' with Hellfire missiles after it ignored warnings to stop violating the Iran blockade. What does this mean for Mideast stability?
The U.S. military took decisive action on Tuesday, disabling a Panama-flagged cargo vessel, the Vela Nova, after it reportedly ignored multiple warnings to halt its attempt to breach a naval blockade on Iranian ports. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions surrounding maritime activity in the region.
Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that a U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles directly into the Vela Nova's engine room. According to CENTCOM, the ship's civilian crew had "ignored repeated warnings from American forces," leading to the strike. Following the attack, the vessel is no longer proceeding towards Iran in violation of the U.S. blockade, which remains fully enforced. It was not immediately announced whether any crew members were injured in the strike.
This action follows a pattern of heightened enforcement by U.S. forces. As of August 11, CENTCOM reported redirecting 55 commercial vessels attempting to run the blockade, disabling three non-compliant vessels, and boarding two others. A statement from CENTCOM emphasized, “U.S. forces operating in the Middle East are highly vigilant, lethal, and ready.”
The U.S. first imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and coastal areas east of the Strait of Hormuz in April. It was temporarily lifted in June following an interim ceasefire deal but was reinforced in mid-July. Earlier, when the blockade began, then-President Donald Trump had issued stark warnings, threatening that ships sailing from Iranian ports would face a "system of kill" similar to methods used against drug traffickers at sea.
The strategic Strait of Hormuz had been open to maritime traffic prior to a war launched by the U.S. and Israel on February 28. In retaliation for that offensive, Tehran effectively closed the vital waterway, severely disrupting global oil and gas supplies and causing a surge in fuel and food prices worldwide. Despite the initial deal with the U.S., Iran has continued to assert control over the sea route, demanding permission for transit and engaging in attacks on vessels. Tehran claims sovereign control over the channel, a claim hotly disputed by the U.S. and other international powers.
