An activist plans a writ petition for an independent probe into Rohit Arya's death during a Mumbai hostage crisis, alleging a fake encounter and unpaid dues.
Social activist and advocate Nitin Satpute plans to file a writ petition in the Bombay High Court seeking an independent investigation into Rohit Arya's death after a hostage situation in Mumbai. Satpute argues the incident was a 'fake encounter' and accuses the state government of endangering lives to cover up administrative failures, saying he has alerted the Chief Justice of India, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, the Human Rights Commission, the Director General of Police, and the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Arya, a Nagpur-based YouTuber and schoolteacher who ran Apsara Media Entertainment Network, had implemented the Swachhta Monitor initiative under the School Education Department’s Majhi Shala, Sundar Shala scheme. The project reportedly involved over 64,000 schools and 59 lakh students. While initial approvals were granted, the second phase of the initiative stalled, and a proposal for ₹2.41 crore remained under consideration. Government officials have confirmed that a report on Arya’s work was sought amid questions about unpaid dues, with reports suggesting the government owed him around ₹2 crore.
Government officials, including Minister for School Education Dada Bhuse, indicated that a report on Arya’s work has been sought. Former minister Deepak Kesarkar admitted offering Arya financial help after protests over non-payment, including hunger strikes in Nagpur and outside the minister’sresidence. During the Powai hostage episode, Arya reportedly held 17 children and two adults hostage in a studio. A three-hour standoff ended with the rescue of the hostages and Arya being shot by police, later declared dead. The incident has intensified calls for accountability in governance and crisis response, with Satpute's petition aiming to establish an independent probe.
Satpute’s move underscores ongoing demands for transparency and checks on how the state handles large-scale debt disputes and crisis situations. As the case proceeds, officials and observers stress the need for a clear, factual account of the events and responsible actions taken by authorities.
