Authorities arrested a 35-year-old farm worker after a seven-year-old girl was raped and tortured with an iron rod in a Rajkot district village; the suspect confessed.
A 7-year-old girl in Rajkot district was assaulted on December 4, with the suspect later named as Ramsingh Tejsingh, 35, a farm labourer from Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh. The girl was accompanied by her migrant parents when the incident occurred in a village near a water tank. Police say he took the child to a nearby water tank, gagged her, and attempted to rape her around 11 am, torturing her with a one-foot iron rod when he could not commit the act.
The parents found her bleeding and rushed her to a hospital. She was moved to the government children’s hospital in Rajkot, where she remains under treatment. The hospital alerted police, who registered an FIR on December 8 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The case has drawn a wide police response, with ten teams formed and CCTV footage from nearby locations examined. A list of about 140 suspects was prepared, and all were questioned to verify alibis. Children’s counsellors and female officers helped show the girl the images of potential suspects; she identified the accused and the man was detained for questioning. He reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation, including the attempted rape near the water tank on December 4.
Police say they will pursue legal action under relevant sections. The incident underscores the ongoing need for child protection and swift enforcement of Pocso provisions, as authorities work to ensure accountability and support for the victim and her family.
