Supreme Court Denies Urgent Hearing for Plea Against Cockroach Janta Party

The Supreme Court of India has turned down a request for an urgent hearing on a petition targeting the "Cockroach Janta Party" (CJP). A bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant ruled on Monday that the matter will be listed in "due course of time," emphasizing that there is no immediate crisis requiring an out-of-turn hearing.

The petition, filed by advocate Raja Chaudhary, called for action against the CJP and a thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The plea raised concerns about fake law degrees, impersonation within the legal field, and the general decline of professional standards. Specifically, it accused the CJP of commercially exploiting recent observations made by the Supreme Court for publicity and merchandise.

The controversy stems from comments made by the CJI on May 15 regarding "youngsters" who enter professions using fraudulent degrees and subsequently target institutions. Chaudhary’s petition argues that the CJP, a digital-political entity, has been distorting these statements for social media engagement, satire branding, and profit.

During the proceedings, advocate NK Goswami expressed concern that the court's comments were being misrepresented despite previous clarifications. However, the bench—which also included Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi—advised the legal team not to take the matter "so sentimentally."

The plea highlights a growing concern over how oral exchanges in court are selectively extracted and sensationalized online, potentially distorting the administration of justice. For now, the case against the Cockroach Janta Party remains on the back burner as the court focuses on more pressing legal matters.
