A Flydubai flight en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, became the scene of a terrifying mid-air incident when one pilot reportedly stabbed another pilot and then attempted to crash the jetliner carrying around 170 people. The quick actions of passengers and crew ultimately averted what could have been a major disaster, leading to an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
The ordeal began when a struggle was heard in the cockpit. According to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citing a passenger he spoke to, a pilot attacked his colleague with a knife, after which the plane nosedived. Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 shows the aircraft making a rapid descent from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in approximately one minute, followed by an erratic circle near the Jordanian border.
Witnesses described a horrific scene. Passengers heard screams and many believed “We're going to die,” as recalled by Naama Bershadski. Amidst the chaos, passengers and crew members bravely intervened.
Some broke into the cockpit, where they found bloodied men.
They managed to subdue the attacking pilot, reportedly using headphones to restrain him, and then worked to stabilize the aircraft. Members of Israeli security forces and air marshals, who were among the passengers, also played a crucial role in taking control.
Following the intervention, the aircraft issued an emergency alert and was diverted, landing safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, about an hour later. The incident prompted Israel to scramble warplanes amid initial concerns of a possible hijacking, which were later dismissed. Upon landing, medical attention was provided to passengers and the injured captain and first officer.
Prime Minister Netanyahu lauded those who intervened, stating they “saved many lives and prevented a major disaster.”
Video footage circulated showing two men on the plane's floor, bloodied, with others providing medical treatment and guarding the cockpit.
Passengers wept and cried out as the aircraft shook.
One person was heard saying in Hebrew, “We are guarding the pilot.” The motivation behind the attack remains unclear, but the incident occurred just a week before the anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, a context that has heightened security concerns in the region.
Saudi authorities arrested the attacking pilot, whose identity has not yet been publicly released. Flydubai confirmed that an “altercation occurred in the flight deck” and praised its on-duty crew for securing the aircraft and landing it safely. Around 160 to 180 people, predominantly from Israel, were on board the flight, all of whom were reported safe.
