Mumbai on 'Orange' Alert: IMD Forecasts Heavy Rains & Potential Flooding!

Mumbai is currently under an 'orange' alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas for today, Sunday, September 13, 2026. This warning extends to several other districts across Maharashtra, which are also bracing for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Mumbai, confirmed the likelihood of intense downpours for the city. While today is expected to be severe, there's some relief in sight as rainfall intensity is forecast to ease from Monday, September 14. Moderate rain is expected on Monday, followed by light to moderate showers on September 15 and 16, and just light rain on September 17.

Adding to the weather concerns, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported a high tide of 4.46 meters occurred at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, with another significant high tide expected at 1:38 a.m. on Monday, reaching 4.43 meters.

These high tides, combined with heavy rain, increase the risk of waterlogging.

The IMD has issued clear warnings about the potential impact of these weather conditions. Residents should prepare for localized waterlogging or flooding in low-lying and urban areas, significant traffic and transport disruptions, and the possibility of weak trees being uprooted. Poorly maintained structures are also at risk of damage.

Furthermore, rough sea conditions are anticipated along the Konkan coast, and vulnerable areas could experience landslides or rockfalls.

The forecast isn't limited to Mumbai. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region and adjoining Konkan belt are also under alert.

Thane is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Raigad faces isolated heavy rain.

Palghar has a more severe outlook, with warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Other parts of Maharashtra, including Nandurbar, Nashik ghats, Dhule, Jalgaon, Pune ghats, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, and Washim, are also preparing for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
