Lights, camera, action! The 70th London Film Festival is officially underway, rolling out the red carpet for an exciting 12 days of cinematic magic. Following in the glamorous footsteps of Cannes and Venice, London is set to host a dazzling lineup of award hopefuls and world premieres, promising a feast for film lovers.
Prepare for star-spotting opportunities as A-listers like Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Cynthia Erivo, Robert Pattinson, Jenna Ortega, and Sebastian Stan are all expected to grace the red carpets. The festival kicks off with Simon Stone's biographical drama "Elsinore," starring Olivia Colman and Andrew Scott.
Andrew Scott himself expressed his excitement, noting the film's premiere location is just moments away from the National Theatre where the movie is set, a truly special touch! The festivities will conclude on October 18 with Jesse Eisenberg's musical comedy “The Debut,” featuring Julianne Moore as a housewife whose community theater role transforms her into a method actor.
This year's festival is packed with highlights beyond the opening and closing acts.
Animation fans are in for a treat with two major debuts: Laika's stop-motion fantasy "Wildwood," featuring an all-star voice cast including Carey Mulligan and Awkwafina, and Brad Bird's neo-noir "Ray Gunn," with Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson lending their voices.
Other anticipated films include the Venice Film Festival success “Wild Horse Nine,” starring John Malkovich in an award-winning performance, and Luca Guadagnino's “Artificial,” which delves into the world of OpenAI with Andrew Garfield portraying Sam Altman. British entries like Danny Boyle's “Ink,” with Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch, and Taika Waititi's adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's “Klara and the Sun,” starring Jenna Ortega, are also drawing buzz.
Robert Pattinson brings his take on Chris Hansen in “Primetime,” while James Gray reunites Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver for the crime drama “Paper Tiger.”
The festival also proudly showcases international cinema, featuring Spain’s “La Bola Negra”, a Cannes sensation exploring the lives of gay men in Madrid, alongside South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong’s “Possible Love” and Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev’s thriller “Minotaur.”
Beyond the big screen, the 70th edition blends major premieres with an international competition, and even features television specials. Look out for Michael Winterbottom's "The Trip to the Northern Lights," reuniting Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, and Marvel's new series “VisionQuest” with Paul Bettany and James Spader.
Ten films will vie for the festival's prestigious best film award, including Hirokazu Koreeda's “Look Back” and Carol Morley's “7 Miles Out.” The festival's reach extends across the United Kingdom, with 10 partner venues allowing audiences nationwide to enjoy a selection of the lineup.
It's truly a celebration of film, bringing together global talent and captivating stories.
