Could the iconic animated series, “The Simpsons,” be nearing its end? Nancy Cartwright, the legendary voice behind Bart Simpson, has hinted that the show might conclude after its 40th season.
This revelation came during an interview on Michael Rosenbaum's “Inside of You” podcast, sparking widespread discussion among fans.
Cartwright, who has lent her voice to Bart, Nelson Muntz, Ralph Wiggum, and Todd Flanders since the show’s debut in 1987, shared her personal opinion regarding the series’ longevity. When pressed by Rosenbaum about a potential wrap-up after just two more seasons, she replied, “Yeah… It’s my opinion.” However, she quickly added that she’s open to continuing beyond 40 seasons if the entire cast and team remain willing, playfully quipping, “Yeah, if everyone is still alive, we’ll keep going then.”
Reflecting on the show’s extraordinary run, Cartwright expressed awe at reaching the 800th episode, exclaiming, “800! You know how long it would even take to count to 800?” This milestone highlights the unprecedented success and cultural impact of the animated sitcom, which first aired as part of the “Tracey Ullman Show” before becoming a standalone phenomenon.
Fans can breathe a slight sigh of relief for now, as Fox secured a deal last year for four additional seasons of “The Simpsons,” ensuring its run will extend at least to its 40th season. The 37th season concluded in February, and the 38th is set to premiere on Fox on September 27.
The show's journey to 800 episodes earlier this year further solidifies its place in television history.
Adding to the excitement, a second “The Simpsons” feature film is also on the horizon, slated for release next year. This comes nearly two decades after the highly successful 2007 “The Simpsons Movie,” which saw Homer accidentally pollute Springfield’s water supply, leading to the town being encased under a giant glass dome. 20th Century Studios has already teased the upcoming movie with a playful image of Homer eagerly grabbing a donut, accompanied by the tagline, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” While the show's future beyond season 40 remains a topic of speculation, it's clear “The Simpsons” still has plenty in store for its dedicated global audience.
