The incident unfolded on Friday afternoon at an industrial unit situated on farmland along Southend Road, nestled between East Hanningfield and Rettendon. Authorities confirm that the fire is still ongoing, with crews working tirelessly to contain the situation.
The explosion, described by locals as "massive," was powerful enough to shake houses several miles away, sending shockwaves through the community. Witnesses reported seeing a colossal mushroom cloud of smoke towering into the sky, visible from a significant distance. Large plumes of dark smoke continue to billow from the site, painting a dramatic and concerning picture across the Essex skyline.
Residents recounted their experiences, with some initially mistaking the powerful blast for a sonic boom. Steven Whan, 58, from nearby Bicknacre, told the BBC, "Our house shook, the doorbell went off. I thought it was a sonic boom because we've experienced that before." He added that emergency services have cordoned off the area, making access impossible. Another local, David Harris, living about six miles from the blaze, described the sound as if "somebody dropped a sort of pallet of bricks or something just over the road, it was that loud, it was incredible."
The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service was first alerted to the fire at approximately 4:50 PM. Alongside fire crews, the East of England Ambulance Service is also on site, responding to what they termed a "significant incident."
