India-Canada Trade: Minister Piyush Goyal Eyes $50 Billion Target on Canada Visit
India and Canada aim for a massive $50 billion trade boost! Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal heads to Ottawa with a 150-member team to seal the deal and attract major investments.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is gearing up for a high-stakes visit to Canada next week, aiming to transform economic ties between the two nations. Leading a massive delegation of over 150 business leaders, Goyal’s mission is clear: he wants to push bilateral trade to an ambitious $50 billion by the year 2030.
The three-day visit, scheduled for May 25-27, will see the Minister landing in Ottawa and Toronto for a series of critical meetings. One of the major highlights includes a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his counterpart, Maninder Sidhu. These discussions are expected to give a much-needed boost to the ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which aims to significantly lower trade barriers.
A key part of the strategy involves wooing Canada’s 'Maple 8' pension funds. These are the eight largest public pension funds in Canada, managing a staggering 2.4 trillion Canadian dollars. Goyal hopes to convince these global investment giants to pour capital into India’s infrastructure, technology, and energy sectors. By highlighting India's talented workforce and growing strengths, the Minister aims to increase the number of Canadian companies operating in India from 600 to 1,000.
Currently, trade between the two countries stands at around $8.66 billion. While Canada is a powerhouse in oil, gas, and critical minerals, India offers a booming market and a tech-savvy population. By aligning these strengths, both nations hope to more than double their current trade volume in the coming years. With two rounds of trade negotiations already in the bag, this visit could be the turning point needed to finalize a long-term economic partnership.
