West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee pledges unity to defend all languages and celebrate linguistic diversity on International Mother Language Day.
On International Mother Language Day, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued greetings and a clear vow: every language deserves equal respect, and no tongue should face attack. In a statement shared on X, she said the state would stand united against any attempt to suppress linguistic diversity, framing language as a shared covenant among communities. Banerjee recalled the sacrifices of those who died in language movements and stressed that protecting mother tongues is central to the state's inclusive future.
She highlighted Bengal's record of supporting linguistic diversity—official recognition to several languages, and the setting up of language academies for different linguistic groups. "Bhasha matters in India's multilingual moment," she said, underscoring that Bengali's literary heritage sits alongside many other tongues in the state's education policies.
The CM pointed out that every resident, irrespective of language, should have the opportunity to study in their mother tongue in Bengal. She noted ongoing efforts to ensure schooling and public services are accessible in multiple languages, reflecting the government's commitment to multilingual education.
The message also linked to broader national conversations, with the post including greetings from other leaders, and tributes to language movements across the country. While not naming other states, she joined calls for upholding language rights in a diverse India.
