West Bengal is bracing for extremely heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, the highest level of weather warning, for several southern districts. A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and is expected to develop into a deep depression, significantly impacting the region over the weekend.
The red alert specifically targets South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts, where residents should anticipate severe weather conditions. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, and Howrah, urging residents to be prepared. The IMD warns that the situation is likely to worsen, especially on Sunday, July 5th, with a forecast of widespread rainfall, isolated spells of heavy to extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and squalls across South Bengal. Other districts like Purulia and Bankura are also expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall.
In response to the severe weather warnings, the state government has initiated comprehensive preparedness measures. District administrations have been instructed to monitor the situation round the clock, with control rooms now fully operational. Officials are keeping a close watch on vulnerable and low-lying areas that are prone to waterlogging.
Disaster management teams, civil defence personnel, and emergency equipment have been put on high alert and kept ready to respond to any exigencies. All concerned departments have been directed to act promptly to address incidents such as waterlogging, uprooted trees, and any disruptions to daily life caused by the heavy downpour.
