Rory McIlroy Backs PGA Tour's Major Playoff Overhaul for 2028!

Get ready for a golf shake-up! The PGA Tour is set to introduce a radical new match-play format for its season-ending Tour Championship, starting in 2028, and superstar Rory McIlroy is all for it. He believes these bold changes will deliver a much more exciting conclusion to the golf season.

PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp unveiled the ambitious plans on Tuesday, just before this week's Tour Championship kicks off at East Lake in Atlanta. McIlroy shared his positive outlook during a press conference, highlighting that the Tour has listened to fans' desires for match play.

I think the PGA Tour and the Future Competition Committee and Brian and everyone involved have really taken on board what the fans have been calling for and have wanted, which is match play,

McIlroy stated.

He added that while the concept is "certainly different," he finds it "cool" and admires the "big swing" the Tour is taking. The new structure, designed to culminate in a thrilling two-week match play event across various venues, will begin by crowning a season-long champion. This will happen after a 90-player, 72-hole stroke play event.

Following this, the top 32 players in the standings will qualify for the Tour Championship. These 32 qualifiers will then be divided into eight groups of four. Each player will compete against the other three in their group, with the top two from each group advancing to the second week.

This narrows the field to 16 players, who will then battle it out over four rounds of match play.

The ultimate champion will be determined when the two undefeated players face off for the title.

McIlroy emphasized that the new format offers significant incentives and ensures that the regular season champion is "adequately rewarded" after the final stroke-play event.

He sees the Tour Championship match play as a completely different, refreshing departure from recent years, predicting it will be "a great thing." This major overhaul signifies a significant shift from the current FedExCup Playoffs, promising a more dynamic and engaging end to the PGA Tour season.
