Indian boxing is enjoying a remarkable run at the Asian Games 2026, with two pugilists, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal, punching their way into the finals, while Narender has secured a bronze medal. This impressive performance has already surpassed India's four-medal haul from the previous edition, with a total of six boxers securing medal-round entries.
In a story of remarkable comeback and vindication, Parveen Hooda became only the third Indian woman boxer to reach an Asian Games final. The 25-year-old stormed past China's Li Shu with a dominant 5-0 victory in the 60kg semifinal at the Nishio Gymnasium. This triumph is particularly significant for Parveen, who had faced a 22-month ban from the International Testing Agency for whereabouts failures between 2023-24.
This ban led to the forfeiture of her Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medal and an Olympic quota for Paris.
Despite a period of low performance and confidence after the ban, Parveen showcased her formidable skills in the semifinal.
She played a tactically intelligent game, maintaining distance and landing precise punches. After a narrow 3-2 lead in the first round, she completely dominated the second for a 5-0 verdict and secured her final spot with a 4-1 win in the third.
She is now set to face reigning Asian champion and Paris bronze medalist Chen Nien-chin of Taiwan, aiming to become only the second Indian woman pugilist to clinch Asian Games gold.
On the men's side, Ankush Panghal delivered a stunning upset, defeating reigning 75kg world champion Fazliddin Erkinboev of Uzbekistan 4-1 in the 80kg semifinals. Ankush's path to the final was a testament to his resilience, as he made a remarkable comeback after trailing in the first round. Losing the first round 1-4, he struggled to connect, but a narrow 3-2 win in the second round ignited his spirit.
The Commonwealth Games gold medalist then took complete control in the third, securing a unanimous 5-0 verdict to reach the final. His achievement marks him as the first Indian male boxer in eight years to reach an Asian Games final.
Meanwhile, Narender contributed to India's medal tally by securing a bronze in the +90kg category.
He fought valiantly but ultimately lost his semifinal bout to Kazakhstan's Aibek Oralbay with a 5-0 decision. Despite the semifinal loss, Narender's bronze adds to India's burgeoning collection, highlighting the overall strength and depth of the Indian boxing contingent at these games.
With Parveen and Ankush now set to fight for gold, the nation eagerly anticipates more glory from the Indian boxing team at the Asian Games 2026.
