L.A. Mayor Bass Urges Resolution in Paramount-WBD Merger Antitrust Suit

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has issued an urgent call for all parties involved in the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger to come to the negotiating table. Her plea is directed at California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Paramount, urging them to swiftly resolve the 12-state antitrust lawsuit currently blocking the significant industry transaction.

At a press conference on Thursday, Mayor Bass emphasized the critical need for a resolution, stating, "The continued uncertainty is not good for workers, not good for productions and not good for the future of this industry." She highlighted that numerous productions in Los Angeles are currently stalled, directly impacting Angelenos' employment and income. Bass, a Democrat, underscored that any eventual settlement must include "meaningful and enforceable commitments" to ensure both Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery maintain their presence, jobs, productions, and investments within Los Angeles and California.

The Mayor clarified her stance, asserting, "This is not about taking sides." Instead, she framed her intervention as a fight for Los Angeles, a stand for union workers, and an effort to safeguard the future of an industry that has called L.A. home for generations. Her primary goal is to "do everything we can to keep it here."

However, not all reactions have been positive. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has accused Mayor Bass of engaging in a "pressure campaign" on behalf of Paramount to push through what they deem an "illegal" merger. Despite this, Bass reiterated her commitment, stating, "As mayor, I cannot stand by while the job security of thousands of hardworking union members is being put at risk." Her appeal is for good-faith engagement to find common ground and preserve the vital role of the entertainment sector in the city.
