Long-standing BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty is set to embark on a new chapter in her broadcasting career, announcing her departure from the popular morning television show after 17 years. Her move will see her take up the coveted role of presenting BBC Radio 5 Live’s flagship morning programme, starting in January 2027.
Munchetty, who first joined BBC Breakfast as a stand-in presenter in 2009, expressed her excitement about the transition. In a statement, she shared her enthusiasm for live news, engaging conversations, and connecting with audiences, all of which she believes 5 Live excels at. She described her tenure with the BBC Breakfast TV team as a “privilege,” acknowledging the talented and dedicated journalists she’s worked alongside, who are not just colleagues but also friends.
The opportunity to present a flagship program on 5 Live was “simply too good to pass up,” Munchetty stated, adding that it will demand her full focus and energy, a challenge she eagerly anticipates. She is already familiar with the station, having presented its weekday mid-morning programme since 2021, and looks forward to building on her existing relationship with 5 Live listeners.
Until her official start in January 2027, Munchetty confirms she will continue to present her current two programmes, assuring viewers and listeners that it will be “business as usual.” This significant personnel change at the BBC follows other recent announcements, including weekend host Rachel Burden’s decision to leave BBC Breakfast. Separately, 5 Live Breakfast hosts Rick Edwards and Rachel Burden recently announced they would be stepping down from their roles in December, with Burden moving to host the weekday mid-morning programme and Edwards continuing with 'Fighting Talk'.
