Bhogapuram airport validation flight marks milestone for Uttarandhra growth

A major milestone in Andhra Pradesh's aviation drive was marked by a successful validation flight at Bhogapuram greenfield international airport, a project aimed at strengthening regional connectivity in the Uttarandhra region and unlocking new economic momentum. The test flight touched down on the airport's runway near Visakhapatnam, signaling that the site is moving closer to commercial operations.

The Chief Minister congratulated the people of the state and credited the broader vision for the development of Andhra Pradesh, referencing the central leadership's support. He noted that the airport was planned during the NDA government's tenure (2014-2019) and announced that Bhogapuram would be ready for commercial flight operations from June. The milestone is described as a new chapter in the state's aviation journey.

In parallel, a key political figure highlighted the broader growth strategy, describing the project within Vision Vizag and praising the GMR Group for its execution. He recalled that the foundational work, including land acquisition and rehabilitation and resettlement, involved about ₹960 crore in expenditure, helping ensure uninterrupted progress.

Officials have said the airport—also known as Alluri Sitarama Raju Greenfield International Airport—has a 3.8-km runway and is currently about 97% complete, with civil and interior works continuing. When fully ready, the facility is designed to handle roughly six million passengers in its first phase and to withstand severe cyclonic conditions.

With the bypass National Highway approved by a union minister earlier, Bhogapuram is expected to become a key hub for air travel in the region, boosting connectivity to Visakhapatnam and beyond and delivering on the promise of accelerated regional development.
