Indian drug regulators seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit Mounjaro injections after identifying storage and labeling irregularities that raised red flags about authenticity. The Haryana Food and Drug Control Administration said the main accused had ordered raw materials from vendors on Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce platform. The seized consignments were recovered from a vehicle on the outskirts of New Delhi, and two people were arrested in connection with manufacturing and selling the counterfeit drug.
In a separate development, authorities in Gurugram conducted a raid at a residential flat allegedly used to manufacture the fake injections for nationwide distribution. A nationwide alert has been issued to detect such counterfeits, and investigators are pursuing the full network behind the racket. A drug officer noted the scale of the operation demonstrates how quickly counterfeit medical products can spread in the country.
Experts warn that fake weight-loss drugs can be dangerous because their contents and dosages are unknown, potentially causing severe side effects. Officials urged customers to buy only from licensed pharmacies and to verify packaging, batch numbers, and regulatory approvals before using any weight-management product. The investigation continues as authorities coordinate across states to trace suppliers, distributors, and points of sale.
The seized stock was valued at around Rs 56 lakh, underscoring the financial scale of the counterfeit supply chain. Health officials reminded the public that counterfeit injections can pose life-threatening risks, including contamination, incorrect dosages, and harmful additives. The crackdown aims to protect patients and deter others from profiting from illicit weight-loss medications.
