Dubai-Israel Flight Diversion: Pilot Fight Sparks Hijack Scare!
A Flydubai flight en route to Israel was dramatically diverted to Saudi Arabia after pilots reportedly got into a physical altercation. Learn how a potential hijacking scare unfolded and the high-level response.
A Flydubai flight, FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Israel, experienced a dramatic mid-air diversion after an alleged physical altercation between its pilots, prompting initial fears of a hijacking. The Boeing 737, carrying passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was forced to land at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The incident unfolded when the aircraft, while flying over Jordanian airspace, transmitted a general emergency signal. Minutes later, a second signal indicated possible unlawful interference, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24. This immediately triggered concerns among aviation authorities and security officials.
The plane then transmitted another general emergency signal before its unexpected landing.
Israeli security officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, later clarified that the emergency signals were transmitted after the pilots engaged in a physical fight. It remains unclear whether the signal transmission was intentional amidst the altercation. Flydubai has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.
The initial alarm prompted a high-level response from Israeli officials. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly held urgent consultations, and Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir conducted a "situational assessment" with air force commanders and other military personnel. However, the Israeli prime minister's office later confirmed that the incident was not believed to be a hijacking.
The flight route between Dubai and Tel Aviv is a popular one for Israeli nationals.
The diversion to Saudi Arabia is noteworthy, given the lack of official diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. All individuals onboard were reported safe following the landing in Tabuk.
