Citizens Rally In Mumbai To Save 45000 Mangroves From Destruction

The city of Mumbai saw a massive demonstration of environmental awareness when hundreds of citizens participated in a mass walk to protect thousands of mangroves along the western coast of the city. The march known as the March for the Mangroves was held to protest against a large infrastructure project that would destroy about 45000 mangrove trees.

People March To Save Coastal Ecosystem

The protest was held in Kandivali, where activist residents and students came together to create awareness about the ecological importance of mangroves. The protest is associated with the planned Versova Bhayandar coastal road project that forms the extension of the Mumbai coastal road system to the north. The grand infrastructure project will enhance the transportation network and help minimise the time people spend commuting to the western part of the city. Environmental groups, however, caution that the construction may have a devastating effect on mangrove habitats along the coast.

It is reported that approximately 45000 mangroves are under the area of impact of the project, and thousands could be cleared during construction. The residents are afraid that the loss will undermine natural defences against storms, tidal surges and flooding that often plague low-lying neighbourhoods in Mumbai.
