At the AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Sarvam AI unveiled plans to roll out a voice-first, sovereign AI app for India. The goal is a consumer chatbot built on India-designed technology that serves a multilingual nation and could rival Western AI assistants in everyday use.
The app will let users interact with a locally trained large language model through text and speech across Indian languages. The company frames this as a mass-market alternative to Western assistants, with voice at the core to reflect linguistic diversity and literacy constraints. India is described as a voice-first nation, where speaking is often easier than typing in many local languages.
Sarvam AI aims to bridge the digital divide by focusing on practical, everyday tasks—students asking questions on their topics, farmers inquiring about government schemes, or someone looking for a nearby restaurant through voice search. The emphasis is on utility and broad accessibility rather than novelty.
The team highlights a frugal engineering approach to train competitive models at a fraction of typical costs and is building a fully Indian, sovereign AI platform that covers foundational models, infrastructure, and applications. Beyond the consumer chatbot, Sarvam AI is exploring India-designed smart glasses to provide mobile access to AI, with the chatbot expected to launch within days.
This push signals a shift in India's AI strategy—from relying on global players to becoming a creator of AI tailored to its own people, aiming for population-scale accessibility and AI as a public good.
