A 27-year-old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, drowned after his car plunged into a water-filled excavation pit on a vacant plot in Sector 150, Greater Noida. The pit, allegedly dug for a building’s basement, was estimated to be over 20 feet deep, with some assessments suggesting it was nearly 50 feet. It was filled with rainwater and lacked barricades or warning signs.
Mehta’s car breached a low boundary at a sharp 90-degree turn in dense fog and tumbled into the pit on Saturday while he was returning home from his Gurgaon office. From inside the submerged vehicle, he climbed onto the roof and pleaded for help for about 90 minutes before rescuers pulled him out; he died shortly after at a hospital. The autopsy later cited asphyxia due to ante-mortem drowning, followed by cardiac arrest.
An FIR was registered against two real estate developers for negligence, including the absence of barricades, reflectors, and mandatory safety measures. The builder, identified as Abhay Kumar, was arrested by the Knowledge Park Police on the basis of manual intelligence and confidential information.
In the wake of the tragedy, authorities ordered a thorough review: the Chief Minister announced a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the death, and the CEO of Noida Authority was removed as the investigation intensified. The case has sparked outrage over civic lapses and the handling of rescue efforts, with calls for stricter enforcement of construction safety standards.
Residents and safety experts say the incident underscores ongoing risks at construction sites in the area and the urgent need for clear barriers, proper lighting, and rapid response protocols to prevent future tragedies.
