Houthi attacks on Yemen's Marib province claimed the lives of at least five people on Friday, August 7, 2026, according to official sources. This escalation sees rebels intensifying strikes on the oil-rich region, following what was described as their deadliest attack in years just a day prior.
The recent surge in violence has rekindled fears of a full-scale return to war in Yemen, the Arabian Peninsula's poorest country. A 2022 truce between the Iran-backed Houthis and the Saudi-backed government had largely held, offering a glimmer of hope for peace, but it began to unravel last month, culminating in these recent deadly incidents.
Among the casualties, a Houthi drone strike in Marib killed three members of government forces, a Yemeni military source revealed. Separately, the Health Minister for the Saudi-backed government reported that rebels shelled residential areas and displacement camps within Marib city, resulting in the deaths of at least two civilians and injuring 14 others. Health Minister Qasim Buhaibeh detailed these harrowing events in a post on X, emphasizing the targeting of civilian areas.
The Saudi-led coalition, which has supported the Yemeni government since 2015, has issued a stern warning. A source close to the Saudi military stated that the coalition would not stand "idly by" as the Houthis escalate their attacks, unequivocally declaring Marib a "red line." The source added, "the coalition does not seek escalation, but we will not allow the current balance of power on the ground to be changed," stressing that Riyadh would not accept a Houthi takeover of Marib and believing the rebels are aiming to launch a full offensive in the province.
In addition to the drone attacks and shelling of civilian areas, the Yemeni military source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information, also disclosed that the Houthis launched "more than 10 missiles and seven one-way attack drones targeting military camps in Marib" province, further highlighting the intensity and widespread nature of the recent aggression. The attacks have cast a dark shadow over the prospects of lasting peace in Yemen.
