Cuban Dissident Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara Exiled to US After 5 Years in Prison

Prominent Cuban dissident Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara has arrived in the United States, marking the end of a tumultuous five-year period that saw him imprisoned in his home country. The 38-year-old artist and activist, a leading figure in the San Isidro Movement (SIM), landed in Miami to a welcoming crowd, holding up the "Libertad" (freedom) symbol with his fingers.

Otero Alcántara's exile comes after serving a five-year sentence in the maximum-security Guanajay prison near Havana. He was arrested in 2021 amidst Cuba's largest anti-government protests in decades, where he and the SIM championed freedom of speech and democracy against the communist regime. The movement, composed of artists, journalists, and intellectuals, has consistently denied Cuban authorities' claims that it is funded by Washington to subvert the state.

Upon his arrival, Otero Alcántara did not mince words, telling journalists, "I believe the dictatorship has to end, and the Castro dynasty has to end, as well." He asserted that "as long as there is a Castro in power, there will be corruption." His journey to freedom was not without uncertainty; his whereabouts were unknown for several days as Cuban authorities held him before the US approved his parole request.
