A significant development has emerged in the gruesome murder case of a Chennai woman, whose dismembered remains were discovered inside an abandoned trolley bag aboard the Tamil Nadu Express in Agra Cantonment nearly a month ago. Police have now apprehended a couple in Manipur in connection with the crime.
The arrested individuals, identified as Manik Uddin Laskar and Bhagabati Majhi, are currently being brought to Chennai. Authorities secured a prisoner of transit warrant from a judicial magistrate in Jiribam district, Manipur, to facilitate their transfer. A senior officer from the Tambaram Police Commissionerate indicated that the team, along with the suspects, was expected to reach Chennai by Sunday night.
Investigators are hopeful that a comprehensive interrogation of the suspects will unveil the full extent of the murder plot.
The couple's arrest on Saturday followed an extensive investigation into the death of 38-year-old Hayathun Nisha, whose decomposed and dismembered body parts were found on August 5. Nisha, a native of Jagatsinghpur, Odisha, had been residing in Guduvanchery, Chennai, and worked at a private firm.
The initial discovery of the body in the rear general compartment of the Tamil Nadu Express in Agra prompted an investigation by the Agra Railway Police. Subsequently, the Government Railway Police at Chennai Central and the Railway Protection Force meticulously reviewed CCTV footage from Platform 4. This footage proved crucial, as it showed a man and a woman carrying a suspicious trolley bag and boarding the train.
Following these leads, investigators traced the couple's movements to Guduvanchery, where they located a rented house on Masuthi Street. It was here that Laskar and Majhi had allegedly been staying with another woman.
When police arrived, they found that Laskar, originally from Dakshin Krishnapur, Assam, and Majhi, from Odisha, had gone missing.
The ongoing investigation aims to piece together the entire sequence of events leading to Hayathun Nisha's tragic death.
