Bears Roar! Bristol Stuns Champions Northampton in Thrilling Clash
Louis Rees-Zammit shines with another double as Bristol Bears defeat reigning champions Northampton 41-26, making a huge statement early in the Prem season!
Bristol Bears have sent a resounding message across the Gallagher Premiership, clinching a dominant 41-26 victory over reigning champions Northampton. The Bears, playing at their home ground, Ashton Gate, showcased an impressive display of skill and determination, making it two wins from two to start their season.
Star of the show was undoubtedly Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit, who continued his sensational form by scoring two more tries.
This marks his second double in as many games, following his heroics against Sale Sharks.
Rees-Zammit wasn't just a threat in attack; his defensive efforts were crucial in stifling Northampton's renowned free-flowing game style.
The scoreboard saw additional contributions from Harry Randall, Gabriel Oghre, and Tom Jordan, who all touched down for Bristol. A penalty try further extended their lead, while James Williams efficiently converted three tries and added a penalty to their tally.
Northampton, despite trailing by just a point at half-time and showing glimpses of their champion quality, ultimately fell short.
Their tries came from George Hendy (twice), Alex Mitchell, and Josh Kemeny, with Fin Smith kicking three conversions.
The Saints' challenge was made even harder as they finished the game with 13 players after Tommy Freeman and Ion Neculai received yellow cards.
The win is particularly sweet for Bristol, considering they conceded a staggering 94 points in their last encounter with Northampton back in May. This performance under Pat Lam's leadership highlights a significant improvement and a clear intent to compete at the very top of the league this season. The Bears will now look to carry this momentum into their next fixture against Saracens.
