SIT Concludes Gogoi Pakistan Links Probe, Report Goes to MHA

Silchar: Assam's chief minister announced that the Special Investigation Team has completed its probe into the alleged Pakistan links of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and will forward the report to the Union home ministry for further action. The SIT was formed on February 17 last year after a cabinet decision to investigate a Pakistani national, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, and his associates, with the probe later tying the matter to Gogoi’s family. The cabinet resolution had linked Sheikh to Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, a British national. Gogoi has repeatedly denied any Pakistan links and has stated that he traveled to Pakistan in 2013 on a climate change project when his wife was employed there; he said the trip lasted about 10 days and that there is no official record of it. The chief minister has claimed that Gogoi and his family held anti-nationalist views, pointing to the couple’s British passports. Gogoi has dismissed the allegations as a political ploy by the ruling party, calling the issue a “C-grade movie” that will flop when the SIT report is submitted. The government maintains the probe was necessary on grounds of national security, and the SIT’s completion paves the way for central scrutiny. Meanwhile, reports from other outlets have highlighted details such as a Pakistan-based firm allegedly employing Gogoi’s wife and salary payments tied to a Pakistani national, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.
