President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to immediately rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America." This controversial move comes amidst a deepening trade dispute and deteriorating relations between Washington and Ottawa. The Great Lake, which forms a significant part of the U.S. border with Canada, has been at the center of a symbolic tussle following recent breakdowns in trade negotiations.

Trump had repeatedly hinted at taking this "symbolic step" in recent days, though it remained unclear if he was serious until the signing in the Oval Office. A White House official confirmed that the order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System to reflect the new name. Canadian officials have swiftly rejected the renaming.

On the first day of his second term, he reportedly signed an order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." That attempt, targeting a name that has been in use since the 16th Century, also drew international opposition, with numerous media outlets vowing to stick to the internationally recognized usage.
