Eight dead and 11 injured as a MEMU passenger train rammed a goods train near Bilaspur; rescue teams rush to the scene and officials pledge support for victims.
A local MEMU passenger train from Gevra to Bilaspur collided with a stationary goods train near Bilaspur station around 4 pm on Tuesday, after the passenger train reportedly overshot a red signal. Eight people were killed and 11 others injured, according to railway officials.
The impact was severe, with a coach of the MEMU ending up on top of a wagon from the goods train. Police and railway personnel recovered bodies, including four women and four men, as rescue operations continued into the evening. Injured passengers were shifted to Apollo Hospital and the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences in Bilaspur, with at least one person said to be in critical condition.
Railway and district authorities launched coordinated rescue efforts as teams worked to clear debris and evacuate the wounded. Bilaspur District Collector Sanjay Agrawal said medical facilities were prepared to treat the injured and urged all possible assistance for the affected families.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the tragedy and offered full state support to those affected. Officials announced that compensation would be considered for the families, and a detailed investigation would be launched to determine the causes of the collision. The incident occurred a few kilometres from Bilaspur city, which houses the headquarters of the SECR zone.
