In Hyderabad, residents are waking up to a tough reality at the fuel pumps. Petrol prices have climbed to a staggering Rs 117.15 per litre, making it some of the costliest fuel in the country. This sharp rise has placed Chief Minister Revanth Reddy under intense scrutiny, with critics pointing toward high local taxes as the primary culprit for the financial burden on citizens.

The surge in prices comes at a time when demand for petroleum is actually spiking. Diesel sales in Telangana have jumped by 12.6%, while petrol demand has grown by 9% during the first few weeks of May. This isn't just about commuters; the state is currently in the middle of a busy harvesting season. Intensified agricultural activities and major grain procurement operations mean that tractors and machinery are working overtime, requiring more fuel than usual.

Interestingly, there is a visible shift in where people are buying their fuel. Private retailers are selling petrol at even higher rates, sometimes exceeding Rs 121 per litre. This has led to a massive migration of customers toward public sector outlets, which, despite the hikes, remain the more competitive option. Institutional and commercial consumers are also flocking to these pumps to save wherever possible.

This latest spike marks the fourth price revision in just ten days. In that short window, the price of petrol in Hyderabad has effectively increased by over Rs 8 per litre. As districts across Telangana report record-breaking sales volumes, the debate over fuel taxes continues to heat up, leaving many wondering when they might see some relief at the tank.
