Soshi Otsuki’s latest Spring 2027 Menswear collection, showcased on a sultry Paris evening, brilliantly reimagines the conventional Japanese corporate worker—the salaryman—on a much-deserved summer holiday. Inspired by his father’s generation and a wistful longing for European travel he never experienced, Otsuki presents a wardrobe where formality slowly unravels into an “intentionally undone mood.”
The collection masterfully breaks down the rigidity of office attire, allowing the imaginary salaryman to relax, just a bit. We saw pale, lightweight, and breezy tailoring in various permutations. Trousers were notably voluminous and softly pleated, while jackets featured a whimsical curl in the lapel, suggesting a natural ease rather than stiff perfection. Shorts appeared as if they were once trousers, perhaps casually chopped or rolled up for a paddle in the sea, embodying a carefree, vacationing spirit.
Key details further emphasize this relaxed narrative: boxer shorts peeking from beneath tailored ones, belts unbuckled, and top buttons undone—“like he does after he’s had a good lunch.” Yet, work is never entirely forgotten; his leather iPad holder remains discreetly tucked into his waistband. Otsuki's thoughtful design goes beyond mere styling, integrating the narrative directly into the product. Checked shirts, for example, featured a trompe l’oeil patterned tie, a clever sliver of fabric sewn directly into the shirt buttons, a detail that greatly impressed LVMH Prize jurors. Hidden jetted pockets beneath jacket lapels ensure phones can be carried with ease, blending practicality with the collection’s refined, yet relaxed, aesthetic.
