Russia pledges higher oil, LNG, and fertilizer supplies to India
Moscow signals steady energy aid to New Delhi as talks span oil, LNG, fertilizers, and civil nuclear projects amid regional volatility.
A two-day visit by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov to India has culminated in a clear pledge to bolster energy ties, with officials highlighting the capacity to steadily increase oil and liquified natural gas shipments to the Indian market. The discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval focused on ensuring energy security as global markets face volatility amid the West Asia crisis. The talks are also seen in the broader context of preparing for the BRICS summit hosted by India and the annual India–Russia summit scheduled for this year, signaling a push to deepen strategic economic cooperation between the two countries.
Russian officials stressed that there will be particular attention paid to cooperation in the oil and gas sector. Manturov cited the capacity of Russian energy companies to steadily increase supplies, reinforcing a willingness to address India’s ongoing energy needs. He also noted that supplies of mineral fertilizers to India had risen by 40 percent and are set to continue, underscoring cooperation in agricultural inputs alongside energy trade. A joint project for the production of carbamide (urea) is described as under development, signaling long-term collaboration beyond immediate fuel shipments.
Beyond hydrocarbons and fertilizers, Manturov and his Indian counterparts touched on civil nuclear energy and broader industrial, space, and technological cooperation. The meetings highlighted shared interests in expanding trade and connectivity while supporting people-to-people ties, all framed against the backdrop of regional and global developments, including the ongoing Middle East crisis and its impact on energy markets. The discussions reflect a joint effort to diversify energy sources and secure reliable supplies for India, even as geopolitical volatility persists, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to sustained, mutually beneficial engagement as key strategic partners.
As Delhi and Moscow chart a roadmap for closer energy partnership, observers will be watching for concrete delivery timelines and contractual details that could translate into tangible market stability for India amid uncertain global energy dynamics.
